The Church of Christ is to be a “contrast-society” or “counter cultural” community. Why? What does that mean? What’s the application to you?

Tuesday – Exodus 22:25-27; Leviticus 25:35-46; John 13:1-15, 34- 35; Acts 2:42-47; 4:32-37

One writer said that “living in community is not optional for Christians.” Why do you think he said that? Do you agree?

Wednesday – Deuteronomy 7:1-11; Matthew 5:48; Luke 5:1-11, 27-31; 6:12-16; John 17:20-23; Ephesians 2:11-22

God calls His people, gathers them out from the world to be one with Him – Father, Son and Holy Spirit. How is the community of Christ (the church) different than the communities that gather together in the world?

What are some of the hindrances and temptations that can disturb, disrupt, and even divide us as we live in our Christian community, the church? What is the application for your daily life?

What can we do to guard against these threats to our living in community as Christians? What can you do specifically?

Look at these passages: they show us what we can do to bless and strengthen the church, the community of Christ. How can you better put these truths into practice?

What is this “episode” about? Why was this important for Israel?  For us?

Tuesday – Genesis 15; 47:4, 9; Acts 7:2-16; 1 Pet. 2:9-12
The patriarchs as God’s chosen people were sojourners and pilgrims, what does that mean for us in the church today?  How ought we to live in light of that truth?

Wednesday – Genesis 47:11-12, 27-31; Ps. 39; Jeremiah 29:1-14
How is this psalm appropriate for us to pray? What does living by hope as sojourners and exiles look like?  What do we learn about it from Jacob and his family?

Thursday – Genesis 22:15-18; 47:7-12; Romans 12:9-21; 1 Peter 3:8-9
Why does Jacob bless Pharaoh?  How does this blessing come true in Gen. 47 (see vss. 25-27)?  What does this mean for us?

Friday – Genesis 47:27-31; Hebrews 11
Why does Jacob make Joseph swear to return his bones to Canaan?  What does living by faith as sojourners and exiles look like for us?

Saturday – Psalm 146; Luke 4:1-28
How was Jesus a sojourner and exile in his own land?  Why is this so important for us?  How does it transform the way we relate to the world around us?

What is God teaching Joseph’s brothers here? Jacob? Joseph?  How do we learn with them?

Tuesday – Genesis 42:1-17; Job 21
How do you think Joseph’s brothers understand what’s going on?  Like Job, they see the wicked (Egypt) prospering, and God’s people (Jacob’s family) suffering – but what’s really going on?

Wednesday – Genesis 42:18-28; Psalm 88
When it seems like everything is going wrong and there is no hope, is that true?  What’s missing in this analysis?  How should that change the way we relate to circumstances, others, God?

Thursday – Genesis 42:29-38; Luke 23
Jacob sees his circumstances and despairs.  How does Jesus face his suffering and death?  Why is that so important for Jacob and us?

Friday – Genesis 42:8; Matthew 16:13-20; 25:31-46
What problems come with mistaken identity and not knowing who is standing before us?  What aid does God give us in knowing and recognizing him?

Saturday – Genesis 42
How is God’s law evident in this passage?  How is his grace evident in this passage?  How do we apply both to ourselves as his people?
