Nobody likes warnings, let alone final warnings, but in Ezekiel 33:1-20 we get a final warning to rejoice in, as counterintuitive as that may seem. Here as God calls Ezekiel to act as a watchman for his people, we see God’s generous, gracious and loving heart. Not only does he give us watchmen to sound the alarm of God’s coming judgment, but his purposes in warning us are also good—namely that we might repent and be saved. Here we see that although there is bad news—that given God’s perfect justice we are all the “wicked,” namely, sinners who deserve punishment—there is also the foretaste of the good news that in Jesus Christ God brings grace for the wicked.
